Context Windows in AI

In AI, particularly in natural language processing (NLP) models like GPT, the "context window" refers to the amount of text or input data the model can "see" or consider at once when generating a response or making predictions. The model processes input in chunks, and the size of the context window determines how much of the preceding or surrounding text is taken into account.

For example, if a model has a context window of 2048 tokens, it can process up to 2048 tokens of input text at a time. Any text beyond that limit will be outside the window and thus not considered in the immediate computation. A larger context window allows the model to better understand the broader conversation or narrative, which is crucial for maintaining coherence, understanding dependencies, and generating more contextually accurate responses.
